Mogsy's Pick
Armada by Ernest Cline: July, 2014 (Crown Publishing)
I'm so pumped for this book I can't even put my feelings into words. I'm just going to go into the corner and giggle excitedly into my hands now. Three words: Ready Player One, also known as one my favorite books of all time, and I've been waiting for the author to write another novel ever since. I think it's finally late enough in the year that I can start seriously anticipating this one now.
"Zack Lightman is
daydreaming through another dull math class when the high-tech dropship
lands in his school's courtyard-and when the men in the dark suits and
sunglasses leap out of the ship and start calling his name, he's sure
he's still dreaming.
But the dream is all too real; the people of Earth need him. As Zack soon discovers, the videogame he's been playing obsessively for years isn't just a game; it's part of a massive, top-secret government training program, designed to teach gamers the skills they'll need to defend Earth from a possible alien invasion. And now…that invasion is coming.
As he and his companions prepare to enter their ships and do battle, Zack learns that the father he thought was dead is actually a key player in this secret war. And together with his father, he'll uncover the truth about the alien threat, race to prevent a genocide, and discover a mysterious third player in the interplanetary chess game he's been thrown into."

Rebecca @ Vicariously!
I haven't heard about this ne before, so thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Ready Player One, but more for the 80s pop culture than the gaming scenario. Not sure I'd be up for his take on The Last Starfighter.
ReplyDeleteHere's my WOW
Books with a gaming/gamer's angle...I just can't resist :)
DeleteYa. Love, LOVED RPO, but this one seems like it has been done before. Maybe I will be surprised.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a WOW to link, sorry =
This sounds like Ender's Game for nostalgic 80s gamers.
DeleteI liked RPO for the 80s nostalgia, but I woke up about half way through and realized that his writing wasn't that great and the plotting was pretty amateur.
Yeah I think he's going to go for the same nostalgia idea, some people have already noted the similarities to The Last Starfighter, Enders' Game etc. I don't see him changing his style drastically seeing as how successful RPO was. That book actually surprised me so I'm hoping Armada will do the same.
DeleteI'm as excited as you are...I am shaking just thinking about reading this book. Give it to me now!!
ReplyDeleteI think I might have seen this as one of your WoWs as well, though I may be mistaken! Still, I know, right?!?!
DeleteEh, not really my type of read, but thanks for sharing! :)
