Mogsy's Spring 2014 Reading List

It's SPRING! Thank goodness! It has been a long and brutal winter and up until a couple days ago it was still snowing, so let's hope things finally warm up now.

Anyway, making a reading list at the beginning of each season is kind of a tradition of mine. I find it helps focus my attention on books I've been meaning to read for a while, most of them past purchases, and for that reason I've stopped including review copies or upcoming books. This also gives me months and hence plenty of time to work through my list.

From the once again dismal completion rate from my Winter Reading List (only 6 out of 15 books, ack! -- but I did take February off for Review Copy Cleanup month) I've taken a page from Wendy and decided to narrow it down to a handful of titles this time. Okay, maybe two handfuls -- a few of these are short! Certainly, a more manageable number of books.

Here they are (and yes, a couple of them are coming back. Like London Falling, I WILL read you, dammit!) Also some notable new additions like Guards! Guards! because I'm ashamed I've never read a Terry Pratchett book and I think it's high time we rectified that. The City Watch books came highly recommended to me by several bloggers, so that's where I'm going to start. See anything that looks interesting?

    1. I wish there were more hours in the day, or that I could read in my sleep. I should have read both of those by now! :)

  2. Bronze Gods and Written in Red...I have them but haven't read them yet. I will put them on my mental TBR list for spring. You've reminded me that I have to read these!

    1. Bronze Gods is definitely one I've put off for too long! And Written in Red was a relatively new addition to my TBR, the second one just came out and both books came highly recommended, and well, I'm always on the lookout for good UF :)

  3. GUARDS GUARDS is the best place to start with the Discworld. I must have read it (and the subsequent Vimes/City Watch novels) about five times.

  4. Ooh yes, I heartily agree with your choices. I'm dying to read THE COPPER PROMISE and WRITTEN IN RED, and I have a copy of LONDON FALLING just sitting here! Plus the sequel is coming out soon, so must get on that one right away. Oh yes, ANNIHILATION! That one is short so I feel like I could slip it in any time. Awesome list, I'm sure you'll read them all;-)

    1. Yeah the upcoming sequel to London Falling is what's lighting a fire under me to get reading this book! I've been meaning to read it for a long time. And yes regarding how short Annihilation is, my thoughts as well haha!

  5. I want to read a few of those, with Shadow play topping my list. Never read Vandemeer, but I know he is one of the New Weird crowd so I should

    1. Yeah, I'm kind of curious about Vandermeer's New Weird...as you know, that's not a category I've had the best experience with, but I've been surprised and I'm also willing to try anything once. The fact that it's short and about science is what makes me want to give this one a try, looking forward to it actually!

    1. Yes, it's a beautiful cover, and if you haven't read the first book Pantomime you should check it out, highly recommended :)

      And thanks!

  9. I don't remember what my starting point for Discworld was. The Vimes arc books are my favorites, so I approve of your choice. :)

    1. Sweet! That's what a lot of people say, so I know I'm on the right track :)

  10. Glad I could impart my wisdom upon you! ;-) Shorter list means less stress, and since I'm sure a tonne if other books will appear in the season, you'll feel more accomplished if you can get through theses ones.

    1. Exactly! I really can't foresee some of the ones that pop up out of nowhere and I just have to read! Keeping the spring reading list shorter also means more wiggle room for me to take those on :P

  11. Nice list. All of the covers look pretty good, with the exception of the pratchett one, but it's pratchett so do I let it slide? I guess so. xD
